Good News!

A 2020 poem

Good news! There is no God.
Good news! There is no hope.
Good news! Your life has no purpose.
Good news! There is neither good nor evil.
Good news! The universe is indifferent to you.
Good news! Hide that knife.
Good news! Call the Samaritans.
Good news! You don’t matter.
Good news! Okay, just go ahead and kill yourself.
Good news! No one cares.

False Prophet

A 2020 poem

Let him be happy for a while
Fill his ears with lies, and smile

Calamity is creeping to his street
Marauding in the darkness
Claws extended, ready to take a swipe
Tell him he is safe
Clap your hands, tell jokes, distract
Play a little game, pocket the cash

Speak a vain imagining or three
Keep that silly talk away from me

Cold

A 2020 poem

It’s freezing
Your heart
I would feel sorry for you
But my heart is the same

Muffled Sounds

A 2020 poem

I am not a prophet
There is a stillness
Betrayed by voices, indistinct
The voice of God?
The voice of the dead?
The voice of neighbours, slightly raised?

A trumpet is sounding
We hear the noise
Oblivious to the call
A summons to war?
A call to prayer?
The neighbours playing Louis Armstrong?

Whisper whisper whisper
Driving us insane
I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to do!
We put on our headphones
A procrastination

Beyond The Walls

A 2020 poem

I tried
I really tried
I tried SO HARD!
But I just couldn’t do it!
The box in front of me
No longer a box but a thin rectangle
It takes up half the room

This idol just sits there
Longing to be worshipped
Feeding my eyes and brain
I stare transfixed
Not daring to turn it off
I don’t want to miss a thing

I’m happy to hear the same old thing
The same old fear
Minute by minute
This is my world
The scariest place
The righteous and the unrighteous

I have forgotten what it looks like beyond the walls
I see few people
Mostly talking heads telling me what to do
Reading out numbers of the fallen
Wash your hands, you sinners!
You could be a killer

A numb mind
A dead imagination
A chronic loneliness
I can think of nothing else
There is no world
There is no imagination
You have taken this away from me

Butterball

A 2020 poem

I’m voting for Christmas
A sinner defiant
Shaking a fist at Heaven
Condemning a God I don’t believe in
It’s easier than thinking things through for myself

I’m giving thanks
For a harvest I didn’t reap
I sit in a cosy office
While the backbreaking work is done by foreigners
They’re coming and taking our jobs!

I’m plump and juicy
A morsel delightfully reared
A snack for Satan
All golden and tanned by the fires of Hell
I take no prisoners - I am the prisoner

Wafer Thin

A 2020 poem

The tiniest of tiny things
Havoc and destruction
Alive and dead, a zombie call
Wafer thin, the chances of non-survival
Evolution, adieu!
Humanity precious
Two legs good
No legs bad

The tiniest of tiny sins
Havoc and destruction
Dead, so dead, a zombie call
Wafer thin, overestimated survival chance
Devolution, adieu!
Humanity precious
Two planks good
No Christ bad

Hit Me

A 2020 poem

Because I can take it
Because I’m an easy target
Because your questions are getting ever dumber
Because you set a trap to show how clever you are
Because you have to earn a crust
Because we’re all in this together
Because you have a reputation to keep up
Because you like the sound of your own voice
Because Because Because
You you you

A Little Bit Less

A 2020 poem

If you can’t bothered to read long poems
Read mine
They may not always be dead poetic
But I usually give you
A little bit less

Fought The Law

A 2020 poem

He’s a law unto himself

I fought the law
The rest is history
Now I know the score

Ain't trying THAT again in a hurry!

In Dark Days

A 2020 poem

In dark days
Where hope cannot be found
Does anyone have a word from the Lord?
Anyone? Even one?

In dark days
Hope is found in Christ
He is still the light of the world
Crush me. Redeem me.

Acid Love

A 2020 poem

Let me kiss the rain
Drink it’s acid love
Till we meet again
I’m flirting with the Sun

Feral

A 2020 poem

Territorial beatings, stake your claim
A knife, a gun, or an old fashioned knee in the groin
And punch in the stomach
A kick in the head and left to stew

Blood drips into the gutter while you sleep
You’re going to regret this in the morning
Nocturnal creatures licking your wounds
Stinky vomit a pillow

Were you conned into a life of crime
Or are you just bad to the bone
Nature? Nurture? A bit of both?
Or something else beginning with N?

Someone standing over you and laughing
A street full of derision, tension
The night time economy a flashing mystery
Neon gods whispering, haven’t you got a home to go to?

Planet of the Apes

A 2020 poem

Hey, hey, we’re the Monkeys
Planet Primates
Kings of the Jungle

White Chimpanzees
Black Gorillas
Red Orangutans

Evolution’s a bitch
Unhappy animal
Soulless man

Moral anaesthesia
Denial crisis
Existential excuse

Empty society
Governmental sinners
Science absolution

Flying Fish

A 2020 poem

Like an exocet missile he tears open the sky
Hovering low, undetected and undetectable
Your defences are down
It’s been a long time coming
Slowly chipping away at love
Your lifeboat had better be working

Here a complaint
There a grumble
Here a slammed door
There a shout
Here a night out with the boys
There a neglected kiss

Cold fish
Smelly fish
Flirty fish
Flying fish

Don’t be angry
Be love
This missile
Dismissal
Blind the radar
Save yourselves
