The End of the World

A poem from 1995

The world ended a long time ago
I’m waiting for the rest to catch up
Waiting for something interesting to happen
But seriously doubting it will
Just biding my time
twiddling my thumbs

So boring
day in, day out
not much changes
summer’s here and I hate it
autumn will come and that’s okay
winter is a drag
spring is the pleasant time, spoiled only
by the thought of dreadful summer
then before you know it
a year has gone by
and everything’s the same
and the end of the world came a long time ago
and I’m still waiting
and nothing interesting happens
my watch hasn’t stopped
just twiddling my thumbs

So boring
year in, year out
not much changes
some new worries
a bit more hopelessness
summer’s here
and I hate it

Camouflage

A poem from 2018

Keeping a beady eye on you
Melting into the background
You can't see me hiding
But I see you
And everything you do
Storing it up in mind
Waiting till I can use it against you

The Battle of Milvian Bridge

A poem from 2018

In this sign, conquer
With this sign, conquer
On your knees, conquer
Through love, conquer
Praying for your enemies, conquer

Forgiving, conquer
In meekness, conquer
In righteousness, conquer
In life and in death, conquer
In joy, conquer

I could call down armies of angels
I could call down fire from heaven
I could make the ground swallow you up
I choose to die a death I don’t deserve

Bow your heads, conquer
In repentance, conquer
In faith, conquer
In silence, conquer
In peace, conquer

By your love they will know
Take my words into the world
Populate the kingdom of Heaven
Carry your cross, conquer

Tag Team

A poem from 2018

Two are better than one

Life comes at you fast
Good times don’t always last

When life cheats
Has you beat
Lean on me

When enemies double
And I am in trouble
Be there for me

Together we can stand
Darling, take my hand

Two are better than one

Antithesis of a Love Poem

A poem from 1986

your eyes are half-closed in permanent sleep
your voice is drippy
and your hairstyle is out of date
your legs are like tree trunks
the bark scaled with Dutch Elm disease
your voice is like a foghorn
your nose is squidgy and piggy
and your feet like a pigeon’s
your hair is like rope
if I were to run my fingers through it
I’m sure they’d come out bitten to pieces
by the indwelling creatures
half of your teeth are missing
but I have to admit
that your moustache is well-groomed

World To Rights

A poem from 2018

We sat
Chewed the fat
All night
Put the world to rights
The world ignored us
And carried on as usual

Kendo Nagasaki

A poem from 2018

Masked villains
We used to laugh at you
We thought you were no threat
A silly little gimmick
But as time passed
Your antics became more extreme
And now you hold the world to ransom
Hypnotising and making us act like chickens
You threw salt into our eyes
It stings and makes us cry
The sword of your indignation
And foolishness cuts down society
The tail wags the dog
We always wanted to rip off your mask
But now you have taken it off yourself
And we see the full darkness in your eyes
You will stop at nothing
You are insatiable
Your insanity knows no end
