Saccharin Smile

A poem from 1985

You smile at me so sweetly
my dear
but I fear
that it is just a Platonic smile
a smile not intended to beguile
but made in innocence
not to betray this wicked mind
which distorts your actions
until they become
a belief that you love me
in a way other than you do
but our love affair must remain
Platonic
so Platonic that it doesn’t exist
isn’t that a saccharin twist?
