Dragon

A poem from 2016
I thought you died out a long, long time ago
Speaking with forked tongue
Revenge was wreaked upon you
Stabbed through the heart
Silenced
Your flame extinguished
The venomous bite antidoted
Strong jaws bound
I thought you'd been tamed
Or had eaten yourself
Swallowing your tail
And moving on up the scales
Higher
Crescendo

Wildly ugly
Mean
Only your mother could love you
But here you are again
And to everyone's surprise you've burst the shackles and escaped
Great again, dragon again
Born again, resurgent
And it turns out you are beautiful
And it turns out you're not a monster
And it turns out your enemies were mad
And you are a butterfly
Delicately misunderstood
Deliciously alive
You love having your tummy tickled
And you want to see everyone smile
