Meditations on the Back of a Ten Pound Note

A poem from 1986

Watch me perform it on YouTube

(Note - when this was written, the image on the back of our note was Florence Nightingale)

the lady stands
looking away from her past
the chocolate coloured memories of her youth
her lamp
a light of love for those
wounded by temptations blight
and bitter heats of searing fighting
in white fantasy abiding
with death looking over their shoulders
smiling at the sickness
silent caring
medication
arm in sling and head in hand
comfort me
        nurse
            with God’s blessing
on towards the promised land
