Rioja

A poem from 2018

A man of the earth
Of ruddy complexion
Of the Old World
Yet very young
Held in high esteem

A man who had it all
Sipped the pleasure from life’s perfection
The fruits of the land
Abundant
Undone by a tree and a woman

Bitter, salty tears
Overcome by fears
Aged overnight
Forced to take flight
Waits for death

And waits for life
One like him yet not like him
Virgin born
To crush the evil that cursed him
To bring him to a better paradise
