Bad Memory Foam

A poem from 2017

I had forgotten all about you
Or so I thought
Sinking deep into the night
Suddenly caught
From nowhere, fear
In the pit of the stomach

For no apparent reason
Up you pop
Heart beating faster
Will it stop?
Like a bad smell that keeps coming back
Choking my throat

You are not real
A mere fantasy
Unable to harm me
I realise
Your chain is broken
You are the dim and distant past
Go back there
I am living
I am alive
