Complicated

A poem from 2019

I have analysed her from every angle
Exhaustively
And still I’m unsure -
Is she a threat
Or a promise?

People Eater

A poem from 2019

I saw it coming in my mind’s eye
All horns and tarnished crowns
It flashed a set of metal teeth
And said it was coming to eat me
Slowly and painfully from the inside out

First the smelly, juicy bowels
It has no sense of taste
It’s wicked work is destruction for its own sake
Moving through the lungs, the heart
Lusting after the brain

I stand unmoved, the vision thickens
I breathe deeply, lift my eyes
Lips form wordless prayers
Terrified, the beast realises the mistake he’s made
This temple is already occupied

Where's Wally?

A poem from 2019

It’s infuriating
That many seek what is hard to find
When truth stares them in the face

A time traveller, bit part in history
A man of mystery
A holiday maker, thrill seeker

All the fun of the fair
Fantasy landscape
The bottom of the deep, blue sea

Never satisfied
We want to win and we want more
All on our own terms, of course

We seek, not intending to find
The constant journeying is the prize
What to do if we reached the goal?

A denial
It smells just like a rat died
In my soul

Scattered

A poem from 2019

Birds they are a-chewing
Taking out the goodness and spitting out the husks

Birds they are a-pooing
Indiscriminately causing inconvenience

And there is death here
As life destroyed before it has a chance

And there is disease here
As life shrivels up and hearts become numb

Here is brokenness that can never be mended
Predators stomping around without a care

Selective Amnesia

A poem from 2019

You can’t remember being nasty
But you can remember all the times when people weren’t being nasty to you
As though they were

You deny everything
Even when what you said is on tape
One hundred times you lied
And still refuse to take the blame

We, the people
We, the plebs
Me, the ruler
Me, the dregs

A plague on all your houses
Blindly self-destructing
We are not going to take this any more!

Well, probably we will...

Tomorrow I Will

A poem from 2019

Today I procrastinated
Put off the things I didn’t do yesterday
Tomorrow I will do more of the same
And life will pass me by
And still I will deceive myself
Raising a fist in the air
And singing, “I did it my way”

Carrion

A poem from 2019

The Pearly Queen is dead
And already black birds are circling
Beady eyes wide with blood lust
Delighting at the instinct of ripping flesh
Red drips from the beak
Tasty morsels of human

Jellied eyes, no longer see
She is blinded by her death
It’s a blessing that she can’t see the coming carnage
At Pearly Gates you cannot view what’s happening on Earth
You rely on the rumours brought back by angels
While awaiting a new body

It's Always Winter

A poem from 2019

The whole world's frozen
The trees forgot how to talk
Wait! The Lion King!
